The Barbie Movie: Beyond Pink Perfection

The+Barbie+Movie%3A+Beyond+Pink+Perfection
Deejay Bafaroy

A giant Barbie in Dubai. A Barbie Dream House in Malibu. Barbie-branded Pepsi cans and pink Crocs. Last summer, the Barbie trend was hard to miss! We all went to watch Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling star in this amazing movie! It was incredible how everyone would dress up in pink and bright colors to show up at the movies, ready to watch Barbie. I remember when I went into the theaters to watch the movie for the first time, and it was like a pink unicorn had exploded. Everyone was as pink as it gets.

In the movie, we find out about  Barbie’s world, living a perfect life in Barbie Land. She is a fashion designer, a doctor, and much more. During that time, Ken spends his time at the beach.

He craves Barbie’s attention, but she is too busy for him. Barbieland has women as the leaders. The Kens (and Allen of course) have jobs like working at the beach or cheerleading for the Barbies playing Volleyball. Everything was perfect…maybe a little too perfect!

As the movie goes on, Barbie suddenly starts having thoughts about death. Her feet turn flat, she develops bad breath, and starts getting cellulite. She learns that she needs to find the girl playing with her in the real world for everything to go back to normal. Ken comes with her into the real world, and Barbie ultimately meets Sasha, who is the daughter of the woman who has been playing with her. They get off on the wrong foot, and Barbie is determined to fix this. She decides to take Sasha and her mother to Barbie Land. However, when they get there they are in for a not so pleasant surprise…

The Kens had taken complete control over Barbieland and brainwashed all the Barbies! The Barbies decide to stand up for themselves and fight back. They de-hypnotize all the Barbies and get Barbie land back! Barbie and Ken end up apologizing to each other. Barbie decides to stay in the real world and accept herself, even if she’s not perfect. In other words, she chose Birkenstock over high heels! And that was very inspiring to me.

In the end, the movie has a little bit of everything for everyone. It’s beautiful and high in colors. It’s also fun and has humorous story telling. But beyond that, it also teaches us a good lesson: that there is more to life than being perfect. And that’s probably the most unexpected message, particularly coming from a Barbie!
