The U.S open is a hardcourt Grand Slam, one of the biggest tournaments in tennis; it is held in Queens, New York. It started Aug 26th, 202 and ended September 8th 2024.There were 128 qualified men for the men’s singles, including Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Grigor Dimitrov, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alrcaraz, who are some of the best tennis players in men’s singles tennis.There were also 128 women who were qualified including Jasmine Paolini, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula who are some of the best and most known tennis players in women’s singles. According to Vanity Fair, this year the U.S. Open reached 1 million fans and the three-week attendance reached 950,000 spectators. 21 years ago was the last time an American tennis player won the U.S. open, and that was about to change this year, because both the men and the women’s singles had two American finalists, but unfortunately, they didn’t end up taking the trophy home.
In the beginning, there wasn’t much tension growing. The qualifiers and the first rounds were boring. It started getting interesting when Carlos Alcaraz, who is ranked 3rd in tennis, lost in three quick sets, to Botic van de Zandschulp who is ranked 68th. It was very unexpected since Carlos Alcaraz is a very talented player who had very recent wins in Wimbledon and got to the finals in the Olympics. To make matters more interesting, Novak Djokovic, ranked 2nd in tennis, lost in the third round in four sets to a 25 year old player named Alexei Popyrin, ranked 28th in tennis.The quarter finals were exciting since both matches ended on a nerve-wracking tiebreaker. As well as the quarter finals, the finals were also thrilling since this could’ve been the first time in 21 years that an American tennis player won the U.S open, but after three quick sets, Jannik Sinner, an Italian 23 year old, won the tournament.
On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula won most of their matches in straight sets and in the final. Aryna Sabalenka also won in straight sets but on a game point. This was her third Grand Slam win, previously she won two Australian opens. It was Jessica Pegula’s first Grand Slam final. Before that, she never made it past the quarter finals so it was very big for her. Because it put her as the 3rd best player in tennis in the whole world.
In conclusion, this year’s U.S. Open was great, except for Djokovich and Alcaraz losing in the early rounds.
