Student Government? Drama? French? On September 13th, JLA students walked through the club fair trying to decide between their choices. Clubs, taking place every Friday during the first period of lunch, is a time for students to explore their interests with their friends. From Model UN, to Judiacs, and Art, JLA students got many options to choose from. We will be going over some of these clubs in this article.
Model UN was one very popular club. The sponsor of this club, Dr. Jackson describes Model UN as a “student run simulation of the goings on of the actual United Nations.” Students who join portray delegates at a UN Convention, discussing current global issues. “There haven’t been many meetings yet but I’m really excited for what we’re going to do” says Ariela K, a JLA 9th grader. While Model UN will not be going to a conference this year, they are eager to get themselves ready for next year.
Another club is the Student Mental Health Awareness Club. run by Ms. N and Mrs. Friedman. The student mental health awareness club hopes to “raise awareness, reduce stigma, and engage in meaningful activities to promote mental wellbeing.” The Mental Health Awareness club meets on certain Mondays at lunch and hopes to increase students’ mental health. They are planning to do this with snacks during finals, therapy dogs, and giving out pie.
Some students prefer student led clubs. These students may enjoy the Dance Lab Club. This club, run by Coach P and Señora Melendez, was designed so the content is directly related to the participating students. Students engaging in this club can find a space to truly be themselves and have fun. As the club itself advertises, “If students want a space to learn TikTok dances, learn /from professionals in the field, [or] produce their own dance show, this could be the club for them.”
Many students at JLA play chess in the Upper School Commons during their breaks. These students may be interested in the Chess Club. The Chess Club is run by Mr. Nandin and welcomes students from many different skill levels. As the chess club flier claims, “Whether you’re a beginner curious about the game or a seasoned player looking for tough competition” This club has something for everyone. While this club may be on the more academic side, that does not mean it is boring. Mr. Nandin describes running the club as “eye opening. I enjoy the Chess Club.”
Clubs are an amazing opportunity for students to individualize themselves, get involved in activities they are curious about, and have fun. JLA offers many different clubs for their students, allowing them to explore their interests and getting important experiences to shape their school experience.
