The Powerball is a popular U.S lottery game where players buy a ticket and choose a set of numbers. Drawings are held regularly, and if your numbers match the drawn numbers, you win a prize. The biggest prize is the jackpot, which can grow to hundreds of millions to billions of dollars when no one wins. On the day of writing this, 12/21/25, the jackpot is a casual 1.6 billion dollars.
How does the Powerball Work?
When you play the Powerball, you’re asked to pick 5 white numbers from 1-69 and 1 red number from 1-26. To win the lotto, you need to get all 6 numbers correct.
Your Chances of getting all 5 White Numbers:
Some important rules you should know are that the numbers can’t repeat, and the order you choose the numbers doesn’t matter. So the real question is: “How many different groups of 5 numbers can I make from 69 numbers?” Imagine you are picking 5 white balls from 69, one at a time. That would be 69 x 68 x 67 x 66 x 65, which gives us 1348621560 (Around 1.35 billion) possibilities. However, since the lottery doesn’t care about order, the ticket [1,2] is the same as [2,1]. Imagine the ticket [1,2,3,4,5]. How many ways can you write the same ticket? If you rearrange the order, that can give you 1-2-5-4-3 or 2-1-3-5-4 and many more. How many in total? 5! = 120. To prevent the overcounting, we divide: 1348621560/120. This will give us around 1/11238513 chance of getting all 5 white numbers correct. However, we are not done yet.
Your Chances of Getting the Red Number
Since there are 26 red numbers, you have a 1/26 chance of getting it. Meaning, you multiply 11238513 by 26, getting you a 1/292201338 chance of winning the lotto.
How Much Money will it cost you to win the Lotto?
A Powerball ticket costs $2, and for you to win the lotto, you need to have 292201338 tickets, which would cost you around $584402676 (approx. $584 million) to win.
My Brilliant Plan:
So my advice: we all pool our money, I’ll throw in $2, and ya’ll can throw in the rest.
